20 years on….
I managed to freak myself out last weekend whilst watching the football. Alan Hansen et al (see what I’ve done there…) were discussing Marco Van Basten’s wonder volley for Holland in the final of Euro 88. Euro 88!! That was 20 years ago! I remember that like it was yesterday - it was a Saturday afternoon, I’d just finished primary school and there was a school fete which I didn’t want to go to because the football was on! Euro 88 was the first football tournament that I was really into. I may still have some of the football magazines from that era, in fact. Anyway as I thought about it I realised that for me to talk about that tournament was like someone talking to me then about the European Championships of 1968! 1968??!! That was like in black and white or something! Don’t ask me how I got from Euro 2008 to 1968 so quickly - but there you have it. I wonder now what will happen come Euro 2028….is there a remote possibility that Wayne Rooney or even Christiano Ronaldo may even be England manager at that time?
